[Kampala, Uganda, April 10, 2023] Huawei, together with Ugandan telecom operator MTN and HIMA Cement Company, launched the country’s first 5G industrial use case in a HIMA cement plant. Offering high bandwidth, low latency, and ability to connect with a high concentration of devices, 5G will enable real-time data transmission in the production area. Harnessing edge computing, 5G will significantly improve the production efficiency of the factory.

At the launch event held on April 3, MTN Uganda and Huawei demonstrated the remarkable advantages of 5G: super-fast data transmission speed and super-low latency. Huawei, together with MTN and HIMA also showcased two unique scenarios brought about by the application of 5G technologies, including the 5G-enabled EHS (occupational health, safety and environment) training and video monitoring, which is more secure than training in real-world hazardous environments and more effectively ensures that factory operation faults and accident risks are immediately detected.

Sylvia Mulinge, CEO of MTN Uganda, said that the launch of HIMA Cement’s 5G commercial project is an important moment in Uganda’s 5G deployment. “Today marks another big milestone in our journey to deploy a technology that will accelerate the realization of Uganda’s economic potential and unlock wealth creation opportunities for its people.” “MTN Uganda is ready, and the network is primed to roll out 5G as soon as we get the regulatory tools and approvals to do so.”

“With this partnership, we can see what’s possible with 5G technology which will accelerate our ‘Plants of Tomorrow’ program to find automated and data-driven solutions to make our industrial operations more sustainable,” said Hima Cement’s country CEO Jean-Michel Pons.

Gao Fei, CEO of Huawei Uganda, said: “Today, we demonstrate some industrial use cases for 5G in Uganda. To Huawei, this is an indication of our long-term relationship with MTN Uganda and trust in our technology solutions. I trust we shall continue walking this journey together because together we are unstoppable for A BETTER UGANDA.”

On April 3, Huawei, Ugandan telecom operator MTN, and HIMA Cement Company jointly launched Uganda’s first 5G digital cement factory project.
